B.S., Biomedical Engineering (Pre-Medicine) with a minor in Interdisciplinary Entreprenuership, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH
Ben Wissel joined Dr. Winter’s lab in his first year at OSU and is now a second-year pursueing a Bachelors degree in Biomedical Engineering (Pre-Medicine) with a minor in Interdisciplinary Entreprenuership. Beyond his undergraduate education, he plans to earn an MD/PhD and, ultimately, work as a research neurologist in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases. In addition to research, Ben spends with time operating W&W Lawncare and Landscaping, which he founded in 2010 and has four employees. He is also a member of the Ohio State Honors Collegium, where he is on the Student Advisory Committee, and a member of the Mirrors Sophomore Class Honorary, which raises money for the James Cancer Research Hospital to fund cancer research.
Ben’s research investigation stems from his interest in neurology. His current work investigates the biocompatibility of neural prosthesis devices. He uses an in vitro model to simulate the scarring from microglia and astrocytes on probes surgically implanted into the brain. An understanding of this scarring would result in improved recordings of potential differences in the brain and, therefore, improved performance of the device.
